Is Calgary Heading for Another Real Estate Correction?
The Bank of Canada warned in late 2009 up to 10 per cent of Canadian homeowners might be in danger of losing their homes when interest rates started to rise from today's historic lows.
Is Canada heading down the same path as our neighbours to the south? Are we looking at a mortgage meltdown somewhere down the road? The answer from mortgage lenders and brokers is short and unequivocal: No.
A very small percentage of borrowers might be in danger, they say. But these are likely people who borrowed at rock bottom rates in the 18 months leading up to the start of the global recession in 2008.
"Two years ago, lenders were much more liberal when it came to qualifying people for mortgages," says Paul Grewal, president of lender Street Capital Financial Corp. "Then…
Sex Didn't Sell for this Calgary Condo
A recent condo advertisement has caused quite a commotion in the city of Calgary. Upon hitting the streets, the Point of View Developments marketing campaign for Midtown Tower condos received almost instantaneous notoriety for its tacky, sexist poster.
The image in question depicted a presumably male body in a suit. The head was replaced with a cluster of images supposedly representing dominant thoughts in a male brain - hockey stick, glass of red wine, dart, game controller, a golf club (over-sized driver), a great poker hand, and a remote.
The caption read, "A $20,000 down payment is as easy as 25-year-old scotch, or a 25-year-old blonde on 25-year-old scotch. Get on it."
In another poster, the content read: "A $20,000 down payment is…

Condo Versus Traditional Home
When it comes to choosing the perfect first-time home, down-size property or even long-term investment, the Calgary condo market may have just what you're looking for. There are many reasons why people might choose to buy a condo. Single professionals, new to the housing market, often find them convenient and perfectly sited. Many retiring 'baby-boomers' are increasingly leaving their large family homes, and find the idea of living in a community with low-maintenance considerations, highly appealing.
But what are the advantages, and disadvantages, to owning a condominium over a more traditional house? To answer that, we must first determine just what a condo is, and how it differs fundamentally from a single family home.
A condo is essentially…

The Bank of Canada has mentioned again the fact that high domestic demand and ongoing financial stimulus is spurring on the Canadian recovery. That being said, the level of economic activity at 5% annualized growth is a little higher than their projections from their January Report.
The Bank of Canada has mentioned that a higher than desired Canadian dollar as well as absolute low levels of US demand for Canadian products are acting as a significant drag on our economy. As a…

Outdoor Staging Your Home For Sale: Cleaning Stone and Concrete
While these days most people understand the importance of home staging when their home is on the market, not everyone realises that cleaning and staging outside their home is important as well. Truthfully though, when a prospective buyer is looking at a home that’s spic and span inside and staged to show off its best potential but outside it has the feeling of neglect then buyers are led to believe that the outside of the home isn’t maintained as well as the inside.
It goes without saying that it’s important to tidy your yard up when you’re putting your home on the market; most home owners realise the importance of cutting the lawn, weeding the flower beds, and raking the leaves, but often overlook cleaning retaining walls, walkways, and driveways. To…
