haunted_house_170One wouldn't expect Metro Calgary to be the scene of hauntings, but as Halloween nears, the tales of eerie happenings in this western city start to crawl out of the woodwork. Calgary has several historical homes and traditional sites that provide the perfect setting for ghostly rumours.

The Lougheed House: Visitors at this historical residence recount stories of a ghostly couple dancing in the ballroom.

Fort Calgary - The Deane House: This popular stop on ghost tours, has lived up to its reputation - perhaps due to its violent history of murder and suicides. Incidents of being pushed by an unseen aggressor, or viewing ghostly figures in the basement and upstairs bedroom have been reported. Many of the staff also report experiencing odd occurrences at some time or another.

Canmore Opera House: This former morgue has been the source of many a spirit sighting. Previously a concert hall, in the late 1800's about 700 miners were killed during an accident at the Canmore mine, and the bodies were housed here. There are several reports of various specters wandering the halls, and sitting in seats, presumably watching the performances.

Grace Hospital: Apparently a former patient, Maudine Riley, who died during childbirth, still haunts the delivery room. There are reports of a woman cradling a child, and the banging of pipes and opening of windows.

The Prince House: Dating back to 1894, this home was occupied by Peter Anthony Prince, a widower four times over. Staff have reported many strange sightings, such as lights going on, even though there was no electricity in those areas of the house. Other tales of a woman and a baby playing in the nursery, and loud stomping noises heard overhead.

Anyone interested in checking out any of this paranormal activity may be interested in one of the organized Calgary ghost tours. Even if you don't see any ghosts, it's sure to be entertaining and informative.
