This area, is the home of Calgary's "old money", was originally known as "American Hill," according to old-timer taxi drivers. Britannia is complete with its small shopping street and high energy grocery store. This community is a well established, affluent neighbourhood with mature leafy trees providing shades and privacy in the summertime. Britannia mainly consists of single family executive homes, with some multi-unit condominiums.
The area has lots of parks and recreational venues, including the Community Association-run tennis courts in Mount Royal and in Elbow Park, and of course the venerable Glencoe Club. The Elbow River pathways are accessible from several spots, with the renowned Lindsay Parks Sports Centre. Public outdoor pools are nearby at either Stanley Park across the Elbow River off Elbow Drive, or South Calgary on 14 Street SW. 4th Street has plenty of restaurants and bars, being Calgary's Restaurant Row.
