Dealing with Common Carpet & Upholstery Stains
An accidental stain on your carpet or upholstery often requires a quick reaction in order to avoid permanent discoloring. But what if you don't know what to do? Begin by checking manufacturers' labels. If you're still in doubt, consider the following guidelines - but remember to always test your solution on an inconspicuous spot first:
Oil, Grease or Butter
Remove excess by blotting the area with a clean paper towel or white cloth. Apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol and repeat blotting. If necessary, apply some non-bleach liquid detergent and gently work into the stain. Add water and pat dry. Repeat as required.
Gum or Candle Wax
Apply an ice cube to freeze the clump, then gently scrape or crumble away pieces from the fabric. If a stain is left behind, try a mild detergent as previously described.
Red Wine
Rinse with cold water and then add salt to form a cake. Apply direct pressure with a stack of books to allow the salt to absorb the stain for at least one hour. Brush away salt and repeat. Presoak with a recommended stain remover before washing.
