East Village Redevelopment Plans - 3D Animation

Not that long ago if you ever had to take care of any business in downtown Calgary, then most likely you would have found some free parking spots in the Downtown East Village area which is located just to the east of City Hall.

Once you found your gracious parking spot and managed to build up your courage to carefully navigate your way around drunken and often groups of people doing and dealing with drugs in broad daylight then you were set for your journey in downtown Calgary.

If this is something that you can relate to then it is what most of us remember when we hear about the East Village area in Calgary. The good news is that this dark side of the notorious East Village is way in the past now and great things are expected to be brought to light very soon.

In 2005 the City of Calgary had decided to clean up this part of downtown Calgary under the leadership of Dave Bronconnier who served as Calgary's Mayor from 2001 to 2010. Initially, there were many skepticisms about the task ahead. Especially when the abundance of construction cranes have disappeared from the area and huge craters where massive skyscrapers were meant to be built were left behind in the real estate bust of 2008.

While Calgary's construction economy was in its midst of challenging times, The British firm, Broadway Malyan was awarded the project of coming up with a master plan for the redevelopment of the East Village area. Broadway Mayan says that - "This part of Calgary is soon going to be a vibrant, mixed-used, creative city neighbourhood - an urban village and one of the most dynamic areas of Calgary's downtown core."

As a courtesy of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) we can take a glimpse at what the newly redeveloped East Village is going to look like in the coming years. The 3D animation provides a realistic view of what to expect.
