Bridgeland in City Centre Calgary
Separated on the south by the Bow River and the east, west, and north by a steep escarpment lies the historic community of Bridgeland. It first got its start in the 1880s when German immigrants settled alongside the Bow River and created the village known as Riverside or "German Town" to locals. Years later in 1903, this land was incorporated as a village. This was followed by the community being officially annexed by the city in 1910.
After the annexation, this neighbourhood came to life with schools, a hospital, and even a community association was created. There was even a Red Light District that stayed around until World War 1. One of the most recognizable landmarks in particular was the Calgary General Hospital, which was demolished in 1998 during a highly publicized controlled explosion. This paved the way for The Bridges, which is a redevelopment project that will house over 2,000 residents when the three phases are completed. This is one of many developments working towards increasing the population and walkability of this community.
Homes & Condos in Bridgeland
Today Bridgeland is primarily a residential community with the majority of dwellings being condos and single-family homes. While some of the original structures still stand, many of them are being removed to make way for brand new condominiums that will house many more residents. This has brought a new look to the neighbourhood that has helped with revitalization and strengthened property values. With so many different types of homes for sale in Bridgeland, they are affordable and within walking distance to downtown, it's clear why so many are flocking to the neighbourhood.
Bridgeland Amenities and Highlights
The redevelopment of Bridgeland has made it an excellent place for easily accessed amenities. Residents can walk to retail shopping, food markets, offices, restaurants, and banks that have recently been constructed throughout the neighbourhood. The Bridges in particular will be an "urban village" once completed, as it will contain condos, businesses, and restaurants in one spot. Anyone who wants to visit downtown or the many communities nearby can drive or use Bridgeland's convenient and reliable LRT Station in the south of the community.
While parts of the community are no longer named "Little Italy" as they were in the past, there are still many bakeries, restaurants, and grocery stores where residents can find unique goods and authentic Italian food. For more shopping or restaurants, Deerfoot Trail to the east can take residents anywhere they want to go. When it comes to entertainment, there's nothing better than Telus Spark. Opened in 2011, this is located on the east side of the community and is home to a science museum with interactive exhibits, educational demonstrations, presentations, and a theatre.
St. Angela Workplace School, Langevin School, and Christine Meikle School are a few of the educational options available in Bridgeland. However, there are many other private and public schools located in nearby communities. For health care there is a health office located on 3 Ave SW and hospitals in the downtown Calgary area. Bridgeland is also home to many churches, including the Calvary Grace Church, Centre Street Church, and St. Matthew Lutheran Church.
Walking up the hill to Tom Campbell's Park will provide incredible views of Downtown Calgary, the mountains, and the beauty of this community as a whole. Most residents will go for the views but stay because this is home to a dog park, exercise pathways, and wide open spaces. To the north of this park is the Bottomlands Park, which is 17 hectares and features a playground, grassy areas, picnic areas, a parking lot, off-leash dog park, and pathways for exercise. Those who walk far enough east from either of these parks will find themselves along the Nose Creek Pathway which provides excellent views and wide open spaces for play.
To the south of Tom Campbell's Hill Natural Park is the incredibly popular Calgary Zoo. This features thousands of animals, a prehistoric park, botanical gardens, and exciting events all throughout the year. And while these natural resources are great choices for residents of Bridgeland, these aren't all of them. They can visit both St. Patrick's Island and St. George's Island using the George C. King Bridge, Zoo Road, or a pedestrian bridge. There’s even a bridge that connects the Calgary Zoo to St. George’s Island for added convenience.
Within Bridgeland itself there are many smaller parks that residents can use, including Tyndale Park. There's also a soccer field, baseball field, and playgrounds located throughout. For those who love golfing and skating, there are ice rinks and golf courses in close proximity for easy access.
