Condos in West End Downtown Calgary

Calgary Downtown West End real estate consists of a high-density residential community, largely made up of condominiums and apartment buildings, with only 25 single-family detached homes remaining in the neighbourhood.

Compared to most cities of its size, Calgary's downtown has a small population - 10,000 in 2003. Residents in the area tend to leave their cars home, as the local LRT makes for a cheap commute. There are Downtown West End condos to suit every lifestyle.

The Downtown West End community of Calgary is one of the most desirable places for city-goers in the area to live. Bounded by the Bow River to the north, the CPR Tracks to the south, 9th Street W to the east, and 14th street to the west, it's a location that's close to everything that downtown has to offer.

However, this area wasn't always as bustling as it is now. When it was first established as a neighbourhood in 1884, the Canadian Pacific Railway had only been around for one year. Slowly residents started moving into the area, naturally using the train depot as the centre of the town.

During the development of this neighbourhood, the majority of buildings were made of sandstone. Many of these can still be found in the community today, especially around the Stephen Avenue Mall area.

Homes that are built today are done so with modern architecture and designs. These dwellings are mainly condominiums and apartment buildings, as there are less than 30 single-family homes remaining within the downtown west end. The prices of these properties differ, as there are high-end and budget-friendly condos available in a variety of buildings.

While the population of Calgary's downtown isn't as large as other cities of its size, it is continuing to grow at a steady pace due to the influx of businesses.

The walkability and close proximity to the LRT also make it ideal for those would rather not drive everywhere they go. And due to the different styles of homes, there are options for every type of homeowner out there.

Downtown West End Amenities and Recreation

Downtown West End is close to fast food restaurants, malls, fine dining, bars, coffee shops, retail stores, boutiques and so much more. Residents can walk just blocks away to the LRT or shops that are near their condos.

Some of the most popular places to shop that are minutes away include Eau Claire Market, CORE Shopping Centre, and the shops along 10 Ave SW. For entertainment and sight-seeing, the Scotia Centre, Calgary Telus Convention Centre, Olympic Plaza, and National Beerhall are all excellent places to visit minutes away to the east.

Downtown West End Amenities

Although retail and restaurants reign supreme in the Downtown West End, recreational opportunities are not lost. There are a lot of options for residents to take advantage of, starting with the Shaw Millennium Park. This is the largest free outdoor skating park in all of Canada and is adjacent to Mewata Armouries.

Century Gardens is another great outdoor spot for residents to visit, but for those looking for something unique, Devonian Gardens is an indoor park located near the CORE Shopping Centre.

Travelling to the north will put residents of the Downtown West End right next to the Bow River. This is where they will find the Bow River Pathway, Eau Claire Park, and the River Pathway. Just north of this is Prince's Island Park, which can be accessed via several different bridges.
