Mission Real Estate Information

A neighbourhood that's known today for being home to some of the most luxurious condos in Calgary, Mission also has a rich history. This dates back to the late 1800s when Oblate missionary Constantinestatine Scollen founded the location, which is also shared with Cliff Bungalow.

A short time after this, Oblate missionary Father Albert Lacombe designated two sections of this land the "Mission District", which encompassed a small community of French-speaking Catholics.

Fifteen years after this (in 1899), under the Territorial Ordinance, the village was incorporated and given the name Rouleauville (after Charles Borromee Rouleau and Edward Hector Rouleau).

Each of these brothers played major roles in the development of the village. Charles was the first permanent resident judge, an educator, and educational founding father. Edward was a surgeon who established a medical practice in addition to helping found many French-speaking organizations throughout the village.

Although their accomplishments were important, the village lost the brothers' name in 1907 when it was annexed and re-named as Mission. During this time it was apparent that the neighbourhood had lost much of its French character, especially when street names were replaced by Calgary's street number system.

Today Mission is a lively neighbourhood that has a lot to offer those who live here. While this includes many convenient amenities, it also includes a mix of different types of properties.

Although single-family homes are popular, the high-rise condos are perfect for residents who want obstructed views of the city's skyline. There are also many detached townhouses that range in pricing to accommodate more buyers.

Real estate in this neighbourhood is situated amidst great attractions such as cafes, and the trendy shops along the 4th Street constitute one of the great attractions for young people. Although you'll find old buildings for sale in this community, you'll also find a lot of new single-family homes, condominiums and detached townhouses.

The location of the community is strategic, offering easy access to the city core, which is great for students and workers travelling to the city. Although one thing is important to keep in mind is that Mission was one of the communities that were affected by the great flood of 2013 in Calgary.

Mission Amenities and Highlights

Mission residents enjoy countless amenities, starting with those located on the ever-popular Fourth Street. This is home to a wide variety of restaurants, boutiques, retail shops, bars, cafes, art galleries and so much more.

It's common for this street to be packed full of residents and visitors during the weekend.Surrounding communities also offer shopping, gas stations, restaurants, and bars for even more options for residents of this community.

With the religious roots of Mission, it comes as no surprise that there are many churches located within the community. There are also many schools, banks, lawyers offices, and healthcare services right inside the neighbourhood. Some of the buildings that are home to these businesses, such as the Sacred Heart Convent and Alberta Ballet, have classic French architecture from the decades they were first built.

Things to Do Mission

Although Mission isn't in a rural area like other neighbourhoods, it still has a wide variety of recreational opportunities nearby. This includes the Talisman Centre, which is a multi-sports complex that has swimming pools, sports tournaments, training camps, and multi-purpose rooms.

The Elbow River is also close by, offering several parks that have water-front views and room for a wide variety of outdoor activities. MacLeod Trail SE is another spot that has heart-pounding fun such as Lloyd’s Rollersports Centre, all without having to travel far from Mission.

For residents who want more outdoor fun, they can take 24 Ave SW for a few minutes and arrive at the quiet Early Grey Park. This has a lot of open space, playground equipment, and exercise pathways for visitors to enjoy using throughout the year. Just beyond that lies Champlain Park and South Mount Royal Park of neighbouring communities.
