Situated in the southwest quadrant of Calgary lies the community of Glendale. Approximately 7km from downtown, it's the ideal community for anyone who wants to be close to the area without all the noise and activity that's associated with it.
Glendale first got its start in 1955 when it was established as an official community. It wasn't annexed until the following year, which is much different from most other neighbourhoods in the area. Soon after it got its start, curvilinear streets began to take shape and homes popped up all throughout the late 1950s and 60s.
As of 2014, the population in this community was 2,739 who were living in over 1,068 dwellings. The majority of these are single-family homes with only 8% being condominiums and apartments. Many of these have been updated to achieve more modern appearances, although it’s still possible to find affordable properties that maintain the look of the era in which they were built. With home prices ranging from the mid $400,000's to the millions, there’s something for every buyer.
Glendale Amenities and Highlights
Glendale residents have a number of amenities right outside their doorsteps. The northeast corner of the neighbourhood in particular features restaurants, convenience stores, pharmacies, a bank, a bar and grill, and gas station.
In the area adjacent to this the neighbouring communities have even more to offer, with fast food restaurants, a deli, a pub, and more all along 17 Ave SW and 37 St SW. Also within the communities are many small businesses situated throughout, including a pizza restaurant, coffee shop, and paint store.
Education facilities that serve this community include Glendale Elementary, Glenmeadow Elementary, St. Gregory, and St. Thomas Aquinas School. There are also a variety of churches in the immediate area, including Antiochian Orthodox Church on 40 St SW, Emmanuel Christian Reformed Church on 51 St SW, and Abundant Life Church on 49 St SW.
There are a number of hospitals in close proximity as well, including the Foothills Medical Centre on 29 St NW and Rockyview General Hospital on 14 St SW.
Recreation in the Community of Glendale
This community features the Optimist Athletic Park, which is easily walkable or bikeable by most residents in the area. This has huge open spaces for soccer, football, ice skating, field hockey, and virtually any other sport.
This is a popular place for organized sports in the area but is used by residents for recreation all year round as well.For those who enjoy playing a round of golf, both the Shaganappi Golf Course and the Richmond Green Golf Course are minutes away to the northeast and southeast.
