Tucked away in the northwest quadrant of the city is the community of Sunnyside. It’s bordered by Centre Street to the east, McHugh Bluff Park on the north, the Bow River on the south, and 10th Street NW on the west. There are also a couple of major access roads that cut through the neighbourhood, including 10th Street NW and Memorial Drive. Making this area even more appealing is the fact that it’s connected to the community of Hillhurst, formally creating the area known as "Kensington".
Sunnyside was originally founded in the 1880s when homesteaders first laid their roots. This continued until 1904 when the City of Calgary purchased the land and turned it into an official community. Since initially developed, there have been a variety of different types of homes built, especially with the growth of the nearby communities and downtown area. While there are traditional single-family properties, the majority of dwellings here are apartment buildings that offer stunning views of the city skyline and Bow River.
Due to its close proximity to the downtown area via public transit or car, the appeal of purchasing real estate in Sunnyside is easy to see. However, it's important for residents to keep in mind that this is located on a flood plain, just like neighbouring communities of Eau Claire, East Village, and Chinatown. Fortunately there is infrastructure in place to help mitigate flood damage, although it should still be a consideration for real estate buyers in this area.
Sunnyside Amenities and Highlights
Sunnyside is a very walkable community, with grocery stores, markets, cafes, bars, and restaurants all being located right in the neighbourhood. The above-mentioned area of Kensington is also located within walking distance and is home to a market, yoga studio, burger restaurant, and many other local shops. Residents of Sunnyside will also enjoy being able to take advantage of the large number of amenities that are available in nearby communities.
Additional shopping can be found at the Eau Claire marketplace that's on the south side of the Bow River. This is also home to restaurants, cafes, and big box stores. 16th Avenue is yet another top spot for retail shopping, especially for those who don't want to travel far to get what they need. For those who would like to reach the core of the city, the Mewata Bridge is one of the best ways to get there.
There are many schools that serve Sunnyside, including both public and private establishments. There are children's programs and daycare centres sprinkled throughout the community and neighbourhoods adjacent to it as well. When it comes to entertainment, cinemas are in close proximity.
Outdoor recreation is easy to find along the Bow River Pathway. From beautiful views of the river to pathways for exercise, anyone can enjoy their time outdoors. For younger residents, there is a school with a large soccer field and playground readily available to play on. Other nearby parks that are popular for residents to visit include: Hillhurst Athletic Park and Riley Park. These have amenities such as swimming pools, sports complexes, skating rinks, and basketball nets. These are accompanied by ample meadows and clear space for just about any activity imaginable.
Within the community itself, residents can enjoy baseball diamonds, tennis courts, soccer fields, and other sports facilities to keep busy. These are often used for games for local school events as well. The Calgary Curling Club is another popular recreational spot within the neighbourhood. Its roots date back to 1888, making it a historic landmark that's well worth at least visiting. It has a banquet room, lounge, and cafeteria in addition to curling areas.
